Father and child on a tandem paragliding flight over the Stubai Valley

Family Guide

Family-friendly paragliding in the Stubai Valley

When the whole family wants to fly together, parents usually ask me the same three questions on the phone: From what age, how safe is it really and what if my child gets scared up there? Out of more than 25,000 flights I can tell you that most of the worries parents have beforehand simply don’t show up at the launch site.

From what age children can fly with us

With us, children start from around three years old or about 15 kilograms body weight. The pilot carries the child in a special tandem harness attached to the front of his own harness. Up to roughly six years of age most kids fly like this — from school age on, the regular tandem harness fits.

There is no upper age limit. We’ve had grandparents take off for the first time at 78 because the grandchild had talked them into it.

Which packages work for families

Kids’ Tandem Flight Elfer – €130

A compact flight, ideal for a first impression. Enough altitude for a real experience, but no long circling.

Kids’ Tandem Flight Schlick – €135

Starting from slightly higher up, with a nice view of the Kalkkögel and the upper Stubai Valley.

Family rotation package

Dad flies with child one in the morning, mum flies with child two in the afternoon. Saves waiting time.

Couples’ High-Altitude Flight – €250

Two pilots take off in parallel — parents and child fly side by side. The best option for photos.

How a family day with us looks

Realistically you should plan half a day for a family of four. Meeting point at the valley station, lift up, a short briefing, then we take off in rotation. While one parent is in the air with child one, the other can wait on the mountain with child two — the mountain stations at Elfer and Schlick have play areas and food options.

From experience: Children almost always ask when they can fly again after landing. Parents are noticeably quieter afterwards. That’s no coincidence.

What really matters for safety

Tandem paragliding in Austria follows clear rules. Our pilots hold the Austrian tandem pilot license, the wings are inspected by the manufacturer every year, and we only fly in stable conditions. In foehn winds, strong valley breeze or any risk of thunderstorms we cancel. We’d rather call off a flight than take off under pressure.

If your child is unsure

Some kids get nervous at the launch site even though they were full of anticipation in the car. My tip: no pressure. We strap the child into the harness, take a practice step — if it feels right we take off. If not, that’s also fine. The voucher is valid for three years.

Children who start hesitating in the middle of the preparation are usually the ones laughing loudest 30 seconds into the flight.

— From more than three decades of flying experience

Which day on the family holiday fits best

I recommend day two or three of your stay. That way you have room for a weather-related reschedule without the experience falling through on the last day. Morning flights are calmer — ideal for children. Afternoon flights bring more thermals and are more exciting for older kids from ten upwards.

Personal take after three decades

Families are our most grateful guests. No other experience generates as many stories at the dinner table. Once you’ve flown over the Stubai Valley with your daughter or son, you have a memory that no photo album can ever lose.

Frequently asked questions from parents

From what age can my child fly tandem?

From around three years or 15 kilograms. Younger children fly in a special harness on the front of the pilot.

Is there an upper weight limit?

We fly up to roughly 110 kilograms without issue. Above that please get in touch first.

Can parents and child fly at the same time?

Yes. With two pilots, mother and child or father and child take off side by side. A great photo memory.

What happens if my child says no at the launch site?

No problem. The voucher remains valid for three years. No pressure, no cancellation fees in that moment.

Is tandem paragliding exhausting for children?

No. Apart from the short run-up at take-off, there is no physical effort. Even sensitive stomachs do well on the morning flight.

Is the High-Altitude Flight worth it for children too?

From around eight years old, yes. Younger children enjoy the shorter kids’ flight more.
